The roots and various dimensions of the energy crisis and electricity and gas imbalance in Iran are being examined.
1. Severe blow to production, agriculture, and livestock farming
Shutdown of machinery and damage to living beings: Livestock and agricultural industries have a different vulnerability compared to other industries. In livestock farms, milking machines and cooling systems suddenly shut down, causing unrest, severe physical damage to livestock, and spoiling milk products.
Additional cost of generators and smuggling: Industry owners and livestock farmers are forced to buy smuggled generators or procure free-market fuel (gasoil) with heavy costs and exorbitant government fines.
2. Damage to heavy and mother industries (such as Mobarakeh Steel)
Million-dollar damages: Large industries such as Mobarakeh Steel, upon which downstream industries (automotive, home appliances, etc.) depend, face electricity cutoffs in the summer and gas cutoffs in the winter.
Confiscation of industries' self-supplied electricity: Some of these industries have taken steps to build private power plants themselves, but the national grid (Tavanir) also takes the electricity produced by their dedicated power plants for household consumption.
3. Iran's paradox: 12th largest electricity producer in the world yet facing nationwide blackouts
Production volume: According to statistics, Iran ranks 12th in the world in terms of electricity production, and its production growth in past years has been higher than the global average.
Root cause of the problem: The main problem is not a general shortage of production, but the imbalance between production and consumption patterns, severe aging of equipment and the distribution network, low efficiency of power plants, and energy waste.
4. Winter gas cutoffs and the power plant crisis
With the arrival of winter, gas consumption in the residential sector increases sharply, which is why the gas entering power plants is cut off. Power plants are forced to use alternative fuels (mazut and gasoil), which causes severe air pollution and equipment failure.
5. Grassroots plans, conservation, and replacement of low-consumption equipment
Valuation and financial incentive: An effective solution to control consumption is to provide incentives and real value to conservation.
Successful experience of heater replacement plans: Plans such as replacing old, high-consumption heaters with low-consumption heaters or blocking fireplaces have shown that with public participation and the allocation of real financial rewards or benefits, the rate of gas consumption decreases.
6. The necessity of government withdrawal from energy state-ownership
Monopoly market problem: Government interventions and dictated pricing have hindered the creation of a transparent energy market.
Ultimate solution: As long as the government holds the ownership and management of the entire energy market, no incentive for optimization will form. The only way out of this crisis is to liberalize the energy market and entrust the right of administration and decision-making to the people and the private sector.
